Perl – just about all Perl code is platform independent and the reason it is celebrating 20 years is due to its ability to run on any platform, it can accommodate just about everyone’s personal writing style. When the web came
along its popularity increased because most of what is done with the web is text based and it is a language that was designed for text processing.
Perl was first developed by Larry Wall, a linguist working as a systems administrator at NASA in the late 1980s, as a way to make report processing much easier. The philosophy of Perl is “There’s more than one way to do it”.
Perl is and has been used for automating systems administration, acting as glue between different computing systems, patching kernels, and is one of the most popular languages for CGI programming on the Web.
